Lesson 18: Parent's Rights / Duties of Children

Parent's Rights / Duties of Children

In a society, the people from whom a person gets the maximum help are his parents, who are not only the source of his coming into existence but they also do the arrangements for his up bringing and training. It is the only being of parents who sacrifice their comforts over the comforts of their children. Their kindness is that shade of Allah's mercy for their children which protect them against difficulties of life in their upbringing. The existence of humanity after Allah is dependent on parents.

Fairest Treatment: In this world, the kindest to a person are his parents, who sacrifice their rest and comfort over the upbringing and training of their children. It is an obligation for their children that when they grow old, they should treat them kindly. Allah said: And we have enjoined upon man to his parents good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning (period) is thirty months.

It is commanded in another verse:

وقضى رَبُّكَ الا تعبدوا إلا إياهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا (بنی اسرائیل (23)

Translation: And your lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to 'parents, good treatment.

Serving and Obedience: The Prophet said that disobedient to parents would be deprived even from the fragrance of paradise. Our dear Prophet has emphasized greatly on serving old parents. Hence, they utilize their abilities and energies on their children, therefore, it is binding on children to be the support in their old age and give proof of recognition of parent's kindness. Once, our Prophet said in the gathering of his companions, He is insulted, "He is insulted", He is insulted. His companions asked, "Who, O Prophet of Allah", He said, "A person who found both of his parents or one of them in their old age and then couldn't get paradise by serving them.

Respect for parents: It is obligation of children to pay respect to parents. It is their right, this is the reason that Allah has commanded at many places in the holy Quran to give them their rights after paying His rights. It is said in Quran.

Translation: And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether, one or both of them reach old age (while) with you say not to them (so much so), "uff", and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, my Lord, "Have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small".

'Avoiding parent's anger: A man should be away from his parent's wrath. The Holy Prophet said that indeed three prayers are accepted. (1) Prayer of victim. (2) Prayer of passenger, (3) Prayer of father for his children. Every person should avoid parent's anger on every moment. As it is said in a hadees that in a father's pleasure, there is Allah pleasure and paradise lies beneath the feet of your mother.

Fair Treatment to parent's relatives: The chain of relations establishes because of parents. Islam has advised to treat all relatives of parents with respect, love and spirit of service. It is called 'kind treatment in Islamic terms. To disconnect this treatment is Allah's disobedience and connecting this provides solace and rewards to one's parent's souls. Though the fair treatment with parent's relatives is fair treatment to parents. Prophet Muhammad said that. It is the best piety to treat fairly the relatives and closed ones of one's father (Riaz us-Saleheen).

Kind treatment to parent's friends: It is binding for children to treat kindly the friends of their father and friends of their mother. The Prophet Muhammad said that the best behavior is this that a person has good terms with his father's friends (Muslim).

Financial service of parents: Allah said while advising for parent's financial service and assistance.

Translation: O Prophet say, "Whatever you spend from your wealth, that is for parents and relatives. Once a companion said to the Prophet Ya Rasulullah", "My father wants to spend my money. The Prophet said, "Do not stop him, since you and your wealth are of your father.

Prayer for forgiveness: parent's service is not limited to their life only but even after their death, it continues. The rewards of children's good deeds reach the parents. The children should supplicate for forgiveness of their parents best way is to offer

and its prayer. When we offer prayer, then there is supplication in it.

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَى

O our Lord, "Forgive me and my parents".
